We love red, but greener is still possible!
Every year, the ZMF is a guest on the grounds of the Mundenhof. A harmonious coexistence of people, nature and animals is very important to us!
Together with our sustainability partner naturenergie, we develop measures that enable us to organize a festival in harmony with our environment and bring more sustainability to the festival summer. We want to create a conscious and careful use of resources in our green festival landscape and work to maintain this in the long term.

Power & Energy – lighting the way to sustainability
- naturenergie supplies the ZMF with green electricity under the naturenergie Gold brand. Green electricity from the local hydroelectric power plant in Wyhlen. We also support the expansion of renewable energies.
- STROMINSLAND converted the lighting on the site to LED some time ago.

Mobility – getting from A to B sustainably
- For the duration of the event, our festival crew will be using electric vehicles from the my-e-car Flotte. In this way we save unnecessary CO2 emissions and are environmentally conscious on the road.
- Concert ticket = ticket for public transport– since 1985, free travel to and from the festival site has been included with the purchase of a ticket – in cooperation with the VAG and its shuttle bus concept, we try to counteract the use of private cars.
- The bicycle parking lot will be enlarged this year, the parking fees for cars will be increased.
- Since 2023 there has been a bicycle checkroom – this offers our visitors a guarded parking facility for e-bikes and bicycles.

Catering – reusable instead of disposable
- Reusable packaging is mandatory on the grounds and the food stands use recyclable packaging.
- There is a free drinking water station at the entrance where our visitors can fill up their water bottles.
- Drinking water: for a few years now, we have been using water dispensers and stainless steel bottles from MIZU for staff and backstage supplies (which also tastes much better).

Digitalization – using less paper
- Concert tickets can be checked in digital form and do not have to be printed out.
- Wherever possible, we avoid paper printouts and digitize our production.

Behind the scenes – all about festival planning
- Long-term purchases: what can still be used is stored and used again next year. Even when purchasing our products, we pay attention to recycling and reusability (from crew ID cards to paper of all kinds to the beautiful merchandise).
- Renting instead of buying: from our tents and palm trees to the containers and furniture – we rent instead of always buying new.
- The ASF provides us with containers for waste separation (and we produce very little, we were told…).
- Our print products and advertising materials are mainly made from sustainable raw materials.

Outlook – measures & goals
We still have a lot of work ahead of us and the implementation of the planned measures requires all trades to work together. Each individual is called upon to question their own behavior and change it if necessary. Even if this is not always the easiest way.
In future, we would like to involve all those involved and motivate them to act in a more environmentally conscious manner within the scope of their own possibilities. Starting with ourselves, we want to promote a conscious and careful use of resources and involve artists, external service providers, agencies and suppliers. In collaboration with Energiedienst, the ZMF is conducting an inventory to calculate our energy balance. Based on this, we will jointly develop a sustainability strategy.
Together we can work on a greener future.
